Job Description
The Inpatient Coder/Documentation Specialist

information into coding/abstracting system. Primary focus is

improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Requires a minimum of an Associate's Degree
in health information management or related field;
Bachelor's degree preferred. Requires Certified Coding
Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician
(RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator
(RHIA). Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of three
years coding experience in acute care setting or above
credentials. Must be able to apply official ICD-9 CM coding

Job Description
This position plans, staffs and manages the
coding section of the Health Information Management
Department. Performs audits to ensure the accuracy of all
coding, abstracted data and data entered into the computer
systems. Reviews clinical documentation for improvement
opportunities. Provides education on improving clinical
documentation. Reviews denied claims for accuracy and
presentation of coded data for reimbursement. Leads
initiatives to improve clinical documentation to improve
patient safety, accurately reflect quality of care delivered
and provide robust data base for research and performance
improvement.
Required Qualifications
Requires an Associate’s degree in HIM or
related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Must be
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or
Registered Health Information Management Technician (RHIT).
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred. Requires a
minimum of three years of coding experience and a minimum of
two years of supervisory experience. Requires knowledge of
medical records practices, policies and procedures, legal
and regulatory requirements, extensive knowledge of
ICD-9-CM, CPT and DRG assignment. Requires excellent data
entry skills and computer skills, including familiarity with
MS Office and personal computers. Must have effective
organizational skills, attention to detail, effective
follow-through and commitment to excellence. Requires the
ability to provide clear accurate direction, to train staff
and to monitor productivity and accuracy.
